Over
the years, several of AJ's contemporaries have recorded their own versions
of his songs. We thouroughly applaud this practice, and would like to
encourage more of it. In that spirit we are providing this forum for showcasing
the varied interpretations of songs from the Jones catalog. We currently
do not have all of the songs available for download but we hope you will
check out the ones we do have and come back later for more.
Kelsie
Love
- Live
For Today MP3/ He's
in Love MP3
Kelsie
was an Olympia, Washington high school student when she recorded these
two songs at Carl Dexter's studio of doom. She and Andras wrote "Live
For Today" together. It features former Previous John Nason (on bass
and guitar) and Chad Ausitinson (on drums) , as well as contributions
from Veda Hille (piano), Carl Dexter (guitar) and Andras Jones (guitar
and vocals). "He's in Love" originally appeared on The Previous
CD, "UnPop...".
The
Noses
- That
Thing You Do MP3
This
is one of several songs that AJ wrote in the summer of 1994 for the film
"That Thing You Do" none of which were chosen for inclusion
in the film. On AJ's version of this song, Jon Merithew and Kelly Van
Camp from the Noses played guitar and drums respectively and sang some
damned fine backing vocals. On this June '96 live version from the Super
Saturday festivities at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington
Kelly sings the lead and plays drums, with Jon on guitar and backing vocals,
and Tim Brown on bass. Feel the power of...
THE
NOSES!!!
Deb
Pasternak
-
Message For The Moon MP3
Deb
used to be a backing vocalist in The Previous when the band was living
in Los Angeles. She has since returned to her hometown of Boston, Mass
and developed a strong following based upon her several solo releases
and consistent north eastern touring. She performed on the Mr. Jones and
The Previous recording, "Porch Music" which featured this song.
She must have got some ideas of her own about how the song should have
been done. She has included this version on her latest release, "eleven".
Here's a review from the Boston's Metronome Magazine:
"This
is truly one of the best releases of Pasternak's career...Prime cuts include
the Ani DiFranco influenced "One Regret", "Reading The
Signs", the sultry "Bitter", and "Message For The
Moon", all of which should illuminate Pasternak's visibility on the
local and national scene"
Di
Patterson
- Drug War
Until
recently Di was based out of Davis, California but now makes her home
in the Santa Cruz mountains. She is well known in central Cali for her
music, as well as her activism. She is currently very active in the support
of the Dineh Elders at Big Mountain. Her former band, The Diane Patterson
Sextet released one CD "Live at The Palms" and Di is currently
hard at work finishing her next release. She learned "Drug War"
from Andras at one of the many shows they have played together over the
years and has since played it at hemp rallies, earth fests, and concerts
all over the country.
Darlene
- Ain't
I A Woman MP3
Darlene
is something of a mythic figure. Travelling the U.S.and U.K. on a motor
cycle with her guitar slung over her back for the last decade, she is
known form New Orleans to Dublin as "one soulful chick". She
has released two self-produced CD's and has toured and performed with
many artists including Michelle Shocked, John lee Hooker and The Previous.
Andras thinks that Darlene's version of this song, which he co-wrote with
Sojournor Truth approximately a century after Truth passed away, puts
his own to shame and gets a lot closer to the true spirit of the song.
An interesting piece of trivia about Darlene is that she appears in the
opening credits of the unreleased film "Hurricane Festival"
with Andras Jones. This song can also be found on her new CD, "Motel
Darlene".
Julie
Christensen
-
Ain't I A Woman MP3
Julie
has a long history with Andras and The Previous. She sang on The Hundredth
Monkey CD, and did a couple of stints as a Previous back-up singer in
the early nineties. She has worked with an illustrious cast of characters
over the years, from Leonard Cohen to Excene Cervenka, by way Todd Rundgren
and Van Dyke Parks. This version of AJ's song was produced by David King
for an aborted children's historical music project for which the song
was originally written.
Dan
Kauffman
- No
Fighting
Dan
Kauffman is a very talented musician who has been playing with Andras
for the last couple of years in Olympia, Washington. He learned this song
for a gig with AJ and John Nason, and when the song got dropped from the
set, Dan went off and recorded his own version. Here is his demo. The
song originally appeared on "The Hard Feelings".
If
you, or someone you know, has recorded a Mr. Jones song. Please send it
to us here and we will feature it on this page.
