A few of the musicians we've
worked with:
(we'll be adding more links soon)
These are just some of the people we have worked with over the years. If you think you should be on this list but aren't, please let us know and we will correct our oversight. EMAIL If you think you shouldn't be on the list but are, remember that time when you needed... yeah, you remember.
FRANK ALLISON
Frank Allison is from Michigan. He has been releasing music with his band The Odd Sox since the early eighties when he counted The Replacements among his fans. Our favorite CD from Frank is "Hokey Smoke".
http://www.songtek.com/_listings/rk_fall-am0597wd.htmDAN BERN
Dan Bern is currently signed to WORK Records and Ani DiFranco produced his last CD. We used to enjoy this prolific provocateur in the comfy confines of the now defunct Iguana Café in North Hollywood and at shows he shared with AJ and The Previous from Portland, Oregon to Richmond, VA. Dan's records are cool but he must be experienced live to really get what all the fuss is about. Dan last played Olympia in May of 98.
Dan Bern - Rock and Roll Will Be Done to You.mp3Dan Bern -
Children of the Cold War.mp3
From a 1990 demo tape given to Andras by Dan. This tape also included the songs
"Cancer In Rats", "That Summer", "They Will Pass Over", and an early version
of "Broken Up In The Wasteland"
Dan Bern - God.mp3
This mp3 comes from
Dan's '94 demo tape. We'll be putting up a better version soon. Of course, we've
got plenty of time.
JON BRION
Jon Brion hasn't really worked with The City Limits although Andras Jones once drove him from a coffeehouse on Melrose Blvd. in Hollywood to a recording studio in the valley where Mr. Brion was producing Rufus Wainwright's CD. Jon Brion is a super talented songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist whose inspired playing has appeared on CD's by Jellyfish, Eleni Mandel, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Sam Phillips, The Wallflowers, Elliot Smith, Mary Lou Lord, Susannah Hoffs, Grant Lee Buffalo , The Eels, and Fiona Apple . He has also produced CD's for Aimee Mann and Rufus Wainwright, and was part of the great unheralded mid-90's super group, The Grays. (with Jason Falkner and Buddy Judge) Jon is currently working on his own CD which will be released on Atlantic Records and continues to perform every Friday night at a club in Hollywood called Largo where his shows attract the hip, talented, and occasionally beautiful set to witness his free form pop experimentations.
EVAN BRUBAKER
Evan Brubaker is one of our multi-talented peers. He is an accomplished songwriter and performer, as well as a producer and record company president. His label is called Cake Records.
http://home.earthlink.net/~evanbjams/old.htmlCHRIS CHANDLER
Chris Chandler is a tireless workhorse of a performer. His particular brand of gonzo political anti-folk is very hard to describe but impossible to forget. He lives on the road but his home is in New Orleans where he collaborates with his writing partner, Phil Rockstroh. Chandler's next show in Olympia will be at The City Limits Anti-Folk Summit on March 19th, 1999.
http://www.primecd.com/chandler.htmCLAN DYKEN
Clan Dyken are activist musicians from Calaveras County California. We met them at The Nevada Nuclear Test Site where Andras managed to attach himself to their Nobody For President Tour '92 with author and comedian, Wavy Gravy. They appear on The City Limits compilation CD, As Far As You Can Go Without Leaving, Volume 1.
http://www.clandyken.comJOSH CLAYTON-FELT
Josh Clayton-Felt went to high school with Andras. They moved out to LA at about the same time and formed the band, The Boon, which played around Hollywood for a year in the late eighties. Josh went on to form School of Fish who had the hit "3 Strange Days", and put out a solo CD on A&M Records in '96. He appears on the track "The Sun" on The Previous CD, "Mr. J and The Fascists: In Search of The Hundredth Monkey".
http://www.joshclayton.com/RALPH COVERT / THE BAD EXAMPLES
Ralph Covert is the leader of the Chicago based bar-pop band, The Bad Examples. We especially love their '95 CD, "Kisses 50 cents". Ralph also runs his own label and co-authored a play which ran in Chicago last summer.
http://alanb.com/bad-examples/DIAMOND FIST WERNY
Diamond Fist Werny is a Seattle band that doesn't sound like it. They sound like psychedelic techno shamans eating peyote with Australian aborigines in the rain. They have played several shows with The Previous.
http://www.halcyon.com/diamondfist/DOUBLE NAUGHT SPY CAR
Double Naught Spy Car is cowboy surf jazz from some of LA's coolest cats. Their CD "Comb In Blue Water" is great party music.
http://www.dnai.com/~pennyw/spycar/THE GOOD
The Good are from Chicago and they are good.
http://www.thegood.org/LILI HAYDN
Lili Haydn is currently signed to Atlantic Records. Her talents as a violinist have earned her spots on record and stage with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Page and Plant, Hootie and The Blowfish, Parliament, Spearhead, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane's Addiction, The Wild Colonials, Natalie Merchant, and many more. One of her first appearances on CD was on The Previous CD, Porch Music. (She also appears on The Hard Feelings). Lili used to be a child actor. She played Rodney Dangerfield's daughter in the film "Easy Money". Her real-life mom was the late comedienne Lotus Weinstock.
http://members.xoom.com/lilihaydn/VEDA HILLE
Veda Hille is currently signed to Bottom Line Records. She is one of our favorite artists to bring to Olympia. Her CD's are all really great and spooky, and her band (Ford Pier, Martin Walton and Barry Mirochnik ) is the most sophisticated scary fun we can imagine.
http://www.n0place.com/veda/INSPECTOR 23
Inspector 23 is Olympia's eclectic youth explosion.
http://www.cco.net/~campeau/index.htmlGABRIEL JONES
Gabriel Jones is an ex-patriot troubadour who spends most of his time singing on the streets of Europe. He has a new CD called, "Global Village Idiot". He is Andras Jones' brother.
http://www.hempseed.com/g/BUDDY JUDGE
Buddy Judge was the least famous songwriting member of The Grays with Jon Brion and Jason Falkner, but he is no less a talent than either. His own CD, "Profiles In Clownhenge" is the finest tuba driven rock album we heard last year. He spent '98 touring as part of Liz Phair's band, and played a great show at Ghengis Cohen with Sheila Nichols and Andras Jones last spring.

RANDY KAPLAN
Randy Kaplan splits his time between New York, Los Angeles and Lawrence, Kansas where he has recently recorded a new CD at Z'gwon,th with the production help of Brian Schey & Colin Mahoney. He has two songs on "As Far As You Can Go Without Leaving, Vol. 1".

BOB KEMMIS
Kemmisutra
Red Hare Music
I love loser records! The Who's "Quadrophenia" is a classic of the
genre. The Violent femmes first record and Tom Petty's "Even The Losers",
are also examples of loser records. In order to be a real great loser record
the artist has to embrace their lack of status as heroic proof of their righteousness.
Bob kemmis' "Kemmissutra" fits right in with the best of them. As
he sings on the ballad "Broke My Fall": "Late at night, my forest
of dreams has been treed and I awake in fright, to finally discover that it
might take longer to fail then succeed". Insights like these are hard won
and Kemmisutra is full of them.
The record's clean production, solid playing, sincere vocal delivery and consistent
tone of self deprecating wit and intelligence should ensure that it has a nearly
impossible shot at wide acceptance, which makes it the perfect underdog record
for the turn of the century.
In the opening song, Bob describes himself as an "acquired taste".
Maybe so, but it only took one listen for me to decide that this was one of
the great loser records and, unlike The Who, The Violent Femmes or Mr. Petty,
Bob Kemmis just might be the real thing. (originally printed in "Axis"
July '98)
LACH
Lach is the founder of New York's Anti-Folk scene. His new CD, "Blang!" was just released on his own label, Fortified Records, and he will be performing at The City Limits Anti Folk Summit on March 20th, 1999.
http://members.aol.com/folkbro/lach.html
NOMY LAMM
Nomy Lamm is a writer/performance artist/lecturer on fat opression and gender issues from Olympia. Her zine "I'm So Fucking Beautiful" and her articles for many regional and national publications led to her being selected "Woman of The Year" for '96 by Ms. Magazine. She collaborated with The Previous, Sandman, and Reva in their winter '97 takeover of the southwest NACA convention. The kids from Brigham Young University just didn't know what to make of it.
http://www.altculture.com/aentries/f/fatxgrrrls.htmlMARY LOU LORD
Mary Lou Lord is a Boston subway singer who is currently signed to WORK records. She crossed our path when she was living in Olympia in 1994. She and Andras shared many open mike stages and a memorable corner at the '95 Yo-Yo A Go-Go Festival in Olympia, where they were joined on the sidewalk by many of the concert headliners.

KELSIE LOVE
Kelsie Love (no relation to Heidi, or Courtney) is an Olympia teen who has recently collaborated with Andras Jones on several songs for her upcoming release.
Kelsie Love - Live for Today.MP3IRA MARLOWE

MAXFIELD RABBIT
Maxfield Rabbit is Julia Albert on vocals and flute, Roger LaPlant on guitar and vocals, Chris Lacagnina on bass, Alan Moreno on guitar, & Robert Jolly on drums. They have been playing the LA area since the late eighties and appear on "As Far As You Can Go Without Leaving, Volume. 1". In 1995 they beat out The Previous, Dan Bern & Bill White Acre for a spot on Star Search. They were beaten in the second round by a Boyz To Men cover group.

MIKE and MYSHKIN
Mike West and Myshkin are hillbilly rebels from New Orleans. Mike West will show up on the new version of Andras Jones' song "Drug War" when it appears on the 2000 BC compilation later this year. They played in Olympia last summer. We hope they will came back again soon.
http://www.mojono.com/mm/SHEILA NICHOLLS
Chick Music
Essex Girl Records
When I say that Sheila Nicholls' new CD strikes me as a cross between Billy
Bragg, Ani DiFranco and Billy Joel's first album "Cold Spring Harbor" it may
not be taken as a compliment. (If I said that it sounded like a British female
Ben Folds without the Five, would that be better?) It is probably impossible
for many of you to imagine a time when Billy Joel wasn't a grandiose pop joke
but before his late seventies heyday and the excesses of his work from the mid-eighties
to the present, the sleepy-eyed songwriter with the McCartney-esque voice who
appeared on the cover of "Cold Spring Harbor" in 1971 was a real treat for fans
of song craftsmanship. Sheila Nicholl's CD shares a similar stark beauty to
the best moments on "Cold Spring Harbor";. It is a document of a fresh, talented
and self-assured songwriter at the piano performing her tunes without any production
frills. Her voice, like Billy Joel's or McCartney's, may be too pretty for some
but her language is challenging and comes from someplace intimate and real.
This is probably what I like best about this CD, Sheila's ability to make what
might be considered vulgar prose into beautifully crafted pop ballads. In this
she resembles DiFranco and Costello, and even Dan Bern, with whom she has performed
off and on over the years. Her melodies are familiar but original, a must for
the aspiring pop balladeer. Her voice has a playful quality, knowing and assured,
and her phrasing serves both the song and the lyric in a way that allows one
to glide along with the melody mindless of her meaning or to dive into the depths
of her words if one so chooses. This sort of subtlety can go unnoticed, Sheila,
look out. If you're not careful you'll end up like Paul McCartney or Billy Joel.
(Is that really a bad thing?) All in all "Chick Music" is a promising debut
from bewitching talent. (originally printed in "Axis" July '98)
NO MEANS NO
No Means No are the godfathers of Canadian punk. Last year they let us put on a show for them in Olympia. The honor was all ours.
http://www.wrongrecords.com/html/body_nomeansno.html
THE NOSES
The Noses were the greatest Oly rock and roll band that never made it. They featured Jon Merithew (C Average) on guitar and vocals, Tim Brown on bass, and Kelly Van Camp (Engine 54) on drums, vocals & harmonica. Their long and unheralded career is chronicled on their 2 CD's; "Flat Out" & "A Pocket Lipstick, Now!". The Noses shared many stages with The Previous and Jon and Kelly backed up Andras on his recording of "That Thing You Do" (comissioned by the producers of the film, and then rejected). Their passing is to be mourned by all who cherish intelligent musicianship, witty lyrics and rock and roll that knows how to laugh while it's snarling.
http://www.olywa.net/noses/
OLD DJINN SWAG
Old Djinn Swag are an Olympia band with a new hip-hop CD due out soon from Braincase Collective. Giles O'Dell, their rap master bass man, is also a brilliant visual artist who has designed numerous posters and flyers for The Previous and The City Limits.
GREGORY PAGE
Gregory Page was a member of the San Diego smart pop band, The Rug Burns, with Jewel co-songwriter and recent major label signee Steve Poltz. He has released one CD and recorded another for Bizzarre Planet records. The first is out of print. The second was produced by John Doe (of X) and features performances by Lili Haydn, Greg Liesz (Joni Mitchell, K.D. Lang), Josh Friese (Paul Westerburg) & Money Mark (The Beastie Boys) but it is currently shelved since his label has folded under the weight of too many lawsuits. Why do bad things happen to good songwriters?
http://www.gregorypage.com
DI PATTERSON
Di Patterson is a Sacramento singer/songwriter who has been steadily building a following for her soulful political ballads and anthems for almost a decade. We love her version of "Free To Be You And Me", not to mention her version of Andras Jones' "Drug War".
http://www.digimag.com/music/cdr/dpatterson/index.htm
THE PEASANTS
The Peasants (formerly The Velcro Peasants) under the guidance of songwriter/guitarist Pete Cassani play what used to be referred to as rock and roll. Aggressive. Tuneful. Political. They got their chops playing on the streets of Boston and in the smoky suburban taverns of eastern Mass. Their latest CD is called "Out On The Street".
http://www1.shore.net/~steqve/bin/show-band.cgi?bid=vel&top=iDANNY PECK
Danny Peck is a journeyman's journeyman. A singer/ songwriter with a timeless voice and a gift for getting himself into crappy record deals. Danny Peck has been the inspiration to a generation political folk and pop artists in Los Angeles and beyond.
http://www.overturemusic.com/overturemusic/overture/dpeckhome.htm
FORD PIER
Ford Pier has played with lots of bands in Canada. The two most well-known are probably DOA and Veda Hille. We love his work with The Showbiz Giants. He is also a songwriter and performer in his own right. He has released two CD's on Wrong Records; "Meconium", and the recently released "12 Step Plan, 11 Step Pier"
http://www.wrongrecords.com/html/body_fordpier.htmlREVA
Reva is a Chicago born songwriter who moved to Olympia and released a CD on The City Limits called "City Child". It was produced by John Nason of The Previous. Reva is active in the Olympia community working with battered women, as well as performing her music.
JANET ROBIN
Janet Robin learned her chops from Randy Rhodes and played guitar for Lindsey Buckingham. Now she has her own CD. She played in Olympia last summer as part of The Radio 8-Ball concert series.
http://www.grassplanet.com/janetrobin/THE ROYAL GRAND PRIX
The Royal Grand Prix are obnoxious, obscene drunkards with a nose for trouble and an endless taste for other people's beer. We love having them as house guests.
http://www.wrongrecords.com/html/body_grandroyal.html
DOMINIC SALERNO
Serene Dominic "Vic Masters" Salerno lives in Phoenix but we met him in New York City rolling around on the floor of Nightingales before a Previous show. He was trying to attract the attention of record people during the CMJ convention. Unfortunately for him, all the record people were down the street seeing The Beastie Boys. Dominic is a very clever pop cat and a hilarious writer.
http://userwww.service.emory.edu/~jkraft/sd.htmlSANDMAN
Chris "Sandman" Sand is a Montana born cowboy rapper who took the Olympia love/punk scene by storm in the mid-90's and then moved to Nashville to gig and mediate with his band The Workhorses of Yesteryear. The Workhorses feature Reverand Asher Dudley on guitar and vox and Camo Davie on drums, percussion, beat box, harmonica, vocals, and more. Sandman has released two CD's ("Roll Out Cowboy" & "Love's Hangover Sale") on his own label, Loner Records and was the opening act at the Sound Hours benefit with Spearhead.
http://www.littlehollywood.org/rollout.htm
SENAYIT
Senayit has a CD produced by Carl Dexter of Little Hollywood that features performances by Arrington De Dionyso and John Nason.
http://www.littlehollywood.org/senayit.htmROD SMEAR
Rod Smear is one weird dude, but he has more soul than a bucketful of Baptists. There is no genre for Rod.
http://www.trough.com/Smear/rs.htmDARLENE
Darlene travels the world on a motorcycle with her guitar on her back and her mind on the next gig. When she slows down it is usually in Ireland or Louisiana but she has been known to turn up for extended stays in Canada. Darlene appears on "As Far As You Can Go Without Leaving" and no less an aficionado of the human voice than John Lee Hooker has fallen under the spell of her pipes. Darlene played bass, percussion, and sang with The Previous on their '97 spring tour of the west coast.
SPEARHEAD
Spearhead played in Olympia at The City Limits' Sound Hours benefit at The Capitol Theater on August 1st, 1998. This event was a benefit in support of Olympia's local currency.
http://hollywoodandvine.com/spearhead/inside/KINNIE STARR
Kinnie Starr is so many things that we don't feel confident to guess who she's being today. It's probably safe to say that she is being soulful, righteous, and just a little bit goofy. Look for her CD on Mercury (the record company, not the planet, silly).
TRACY THIELEN
Tracy Thielen and The Hindenburgh Ground Crew are the product of Tracy Thielen's skewed sense of song and the production genius of Duke McVinnie.
http://www.actionbox.com/ouch.htmlBILL WHITE ACRE
Bill White Acre played at Andras' first show in LA in 1988 and they have been friends ever since. Bill is a brilliant producer/guitarist/songwriter who appears on the As Far As You Can Go Without Leaving compilation.
http://www.imusic.interserv.com/showcase/indie/billwhiteacre.htmlPETER WILDE
TAMARA WILLIAMSON
Tamara Williamson played in Olympia in 1998 with Bob Wiseman. She is a very hypnotic performer.
http://www.interlog.com/~ladyblue/tamara2.htmBOB WISEMAN
Bob Wiseman from Toronto is another producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist. His CD's are very hard to find in the states but well worth the search. We especially recommend "Lake Michigan Soda presents..." and "More Work Songs from The Planet Of The Apes" featuring The Previous on one track.
http://www.bobwiseman.ca/
THE ZOOKEEPERS
The Zookeepers are the purveyors of the songs of Patrick Vernon. Pat is another Iguana Café graduate who currently leads his three piece club band on an unending tour of the west coast.
