BRAKES

Owners/Mechanics Warning. The brake pipe on all older Land-Rovers carries a dangerous potential safety-hazard.
All conventional brake fluids attract moisture, and water being heavier than brake fluid, it settles to the bottom of both hydraulic cylinders and brake pipe, where, inevitably, corrosion eats away at the inner walls of both steel and
aluminum brake components. Additionally, exterior environments include such hazards as moisture, road salt, and battery acid, all of which attack the outside surface of brake pipes, causing them to rust, sometimes making the tubing wallpaper-thin. While GIRLING recommends changing the brake fluid every 18 months, this guideline is most often neglected. For this reason we strongly advise the following: approximately once each month the ownder or his mechanic
should depress the brake pedal as if in a "panic stop", applying maximum pressure for approximately 20 to 30 seconds ( Late IIa's & Series III's fitted with brake servo: with engine running). This should be carried out with the Land Rover on level ground, with hand brake set and wheels chocked!Should the brake pedal suddenly go to the floor ( or go halfway to the floor with servo-assist), thise is a good possibility that a severely-corroded section of brake pipe has ruptured. Have an assistant view the brake pipe during this test, looking for spray mist or dampness from leaking. The right front brake pipe under the battery acid. For maximum safety, brake pipe should be replaced periodically, and the brake fluid changed according to manufactures specification.

Owner's/Mechanic's Warning: All early workshop service and parts manuals show brake shoe pull-off springs inaccurately positioned. Please note that despite these dangerously misleading diagrams all brake springs are located between the shoes and the backing plate; i.e. inboard in the case of the road wheels, forward in the case of the hand brake. Be advised that although you may find the brake springs located incorrectly upon disassembly, such inaccuracy may lead to catastrophic brake system failure. Short wheelbase upper springs have the long end "behind" or "inboard of" the snail cam. No springs should ever touch the wheel hub. Stretched, disfigured, or bent springs must be replaced.

For proper brake system function it is best to "turn" all new drums on a brake drum

Mechanic's Note: Be sure to fasten all brake pipes securely to chassis and to axle cases
to avoid vibration, work-hardening, metal fatigue and/or snagging of pipes by debris
thrown by tyres off road. Heavy nylon cable ties may be used for this purpose.

Because all conventional brake fluids attract some degree of moisture GIRLING reccommends changing
the brake fluid every eighteen months. When water finds its way into the hydraulic system it settles to the bottom of the master and slave cylinders and brake pipe causing them to corrode and pit, making them dangerous.

absorb moisture, and never needs to be changed. With inherent lubricating qualities
it promotes longevity of moving parts, and it does not damage paint work when spilled
